If you are interested in applying for a probation officer job, you will need to be prepared to deal with and supervise offenders of all types, genders and ages. Some of these offenders would have just been put on specific orders within the community, while others would have been released from prison and are on parole. Your tasks as a probation officer will include managing your clients efficiently and ensuring that they are carrying out all the conditions of their parole in a proper manner, and not breaking the probation agreements set down by the parole board in a court of law.
Often an offender will be placed on house arrest and it will say in the probation officer job description that you will be the one in charge of checking up on the offender at home, and should your client not stick to the strict conditions set out, it will also be your job to report this to the parole board for further action to be taken. As a probation officer, you will have to get your client to join various community-based programs, like community service and other such work programs, and at a later time assist in finding a job for the offender, as well as interview all family members and counselors of the offender to gauge his or her level of rehabilitation.
If you accept a probation officer job, you will need to find out what the specific needs are of each offender under you care, and then try and find a program that has been designed with his or her social development needs in mind, and insist that the offender attend this program on a regular basis. You will also need to provide assistance and education on matters that might concern the offender, such as adequate housing options, finance and employment details and other such things that might help him or her with the adjustment back to a normal mode of living.
If you are keen on getting a probation officer job you may be required to work in a specialized correctional institution or else in an office, and a lot of your time will be spent in the courtroom, in the prison visitation area and also out in the city while interviewing family members of the offender. You will need to be an individual who is mature, has a great deal of discretion and is also patient and tolerant of difficult people. You will need to have specialized skills that enable you to clearly assess people and situations, as well as have excellent communication skills and be willing to help individuals live a better lifestyle.
Through your probation officer job you will learn to control your emotions and become an expert in what is known as motivational interviewing, which is a specialized tool used to figure out an offender’s level of change, for the better or worse, without him or her knowing you that are doing it. You will also need to be able to supply complete support to each and every offender and to treat each one as though he or she is your only client.
